faith

"He came back to us with stories of bedrooms filled with crumpled panties, of stuffed animals hugged to death by the passion of the girls, of a crucifix draped with a brassiere, of gauzy chambers of canopied beds, and of the effluvia of so many young girls becoming women together in the same cramped space."
Jeffrey Eugenides The Virgin Suicides

Hello all,

I love The Virgin Suicides - it's definitely on my list of favourites. I find that when I read books, it's the aesthetics and mood which the author evokes which draw me in the most, and these photos kind of reminded me of the darker 1950s suburbia that Eugenides sets his story in. The motif of Lux's bra on a crucifix was one which I remembered from heart, and it symbolises the loss of innocence and a desperate rebellion in the hopes of breaking from imposed beliefs, something which I feel like I can connect to. Or want to, more like.
Faith also seemed like an appropriate title given that right now, I'm half dead from studying and I really need to believe that it will be worth it.
Time to continue researching the various painful ways the Egyptians and Romans died because of their affinity towards lead as a cosmetic.

The stories behind the pictures
1. Taken using flash. It's a Buddha figure which my mum hangs in her car. It's funny, my family isn't religious but my parents can be uber superstitious at times. I'm an atheist though.
2. It was hot that night, and that's my sister in the picture. The light looked cool.
3. A room with a view.
4. Same set as number 2.

teen idle

"I wish I'd been, I wish I'd been a teen, teen idle. Wished I'd been a prom queen  fighting for the title, instead of being 16 and burning up the bible."
Marina and the Diamonds "Teen Idle"

Salut mes chers

Just a couple of photos from the last few weeks. Currently trying to write up my history extension proposal, which is on the Spanish Civil War. It's harder to find a summary of Pio Moa's Los Mitos de la Guerre Civil that's in English than one would expect.

The story behind the photos
1. A selfie I took yesterday. I wanted to see what my earrings looked like side on haha.
2. From ages ago, when I was lying in bed.
3. Yesterday, my sister's friends got her a Ciaté mini manicure advent calendar for her birthday from a while ago and I like documenting random moments.
4. My mum thinks I'm weird for taking a photo of the skies every other day.
